The family´s history of winemaking dates back to 1744. In 1985 Johannes Leitz took over the estate which then had about 3 hectares under coverage. He then expanded the business to a successful wine estate which is both nationally and internationally known and has 120 hectares under coverage. He now exports to Norway, Sweden, Britain, USA and further 35 countries worldwide.
This constant growth was by no means negative; premium dry wines from the sites Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg, Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland and Rüdesheimer Berg Kaisersteinfels are rated among the best international wines. Wines by Johannes Leitz carry his signature and mirror the terroir of the Rüdesheim Berg soil structure.
Johannes Leitz is deeply bound to his home. His love for his unique vineyards and his respect for the great site Rüdesheimer Berg which is part of the world cultural heritage Middle Rhine, he feels obliged, in collaboration with nature conservation, to preserve this ancient cultural landscape. He also takes part in recultivating old and collapsed terraced sites of the Rüdesheim Berg Rottland and Rüdesheim Berg Kaisersteinfels.
The crowning achievement was Gault Millau´s „Wine maker of the Year 2011“.
